Bench Farms was founded in 1940 by David’s parents, Charles and Margaret Bench. In those days, the farm operated as a dairy farm and vegetable farm, raising primarily sugar beets, pickles, and tomatoes for processing. In 1941, the family abandoned the dairy and focused exclusively on vegetables. One day, they placed a few bushels of potatoes on a wagon along with a For Sale sign along the road, and sold out! And so was born the Roadside Market Stand. David and Cindy were married in 1975 and eventually took over the farm in 1982. After a fluke purchase of a tulip geranium, Cindy got hooked on flowers and slowly amassed an unusual plant collection. Her hobby turned into a part of the business venture, as the greenhouse took off at Bench Farms. The Benches decided to abandon raising vegetables for processing, and instead focus on their niche of growing distinct vegetable varieties for the Roadside stand. After many years of experience, their sweet corn has become famous in northern Ohio, as well as their heirloom vegetables. Customers also travel for miles to glean gardening wisdom from the Greenhouse staff. In 1997, following the talents of Sandy Nolan, a farm store was opened called the Grainary, selling collectible items, crafts and antiques. You’ll also find David and his boys running the combine in the fall, harvesting their commodity crops like soybeans and field corn. The Bench Farm has always been a family-focused farm, known for its reputation for honesty, friendliness, and a sincere interest in their customers’ lives. Each of their children — Kurt, Arik, and Heidi — grew up learning the business and growing a love for the land. You can still find each of their children (and now their families) intricately involved in the myriad tasks of running Bench Farms and building into its legacy.
